New Artwork of the Predator: Honoring the Fearsome Alien Hunter from the Movie Franchise

Sketch of the Predator.

Introduction:

In the realm of science fiction and action cinema, few creatures have left as indelible a mark as the Predator. With its iconic design and relentless pursuit of prey, the Predator has become an enduring symbol of extraterrestrial menace.

In this article, I am excited to share my new black-and-white marker drawing of the Predator, aiming to honor its presence in the franchise. We'll explore the origins of the character, delve into the first Predator movie, discuss the creation of its striking design, and touch upon the Alien vs. Predator crossovers that have expanded its mythology.

The Birth of the Predator:

The Predator made its first appearance in the 1987 film simply titled Predator, directed by John McTiernan. The film follows a group of elite soldiers who become targets of an extraterrestrial hunter during a rescue mission in Central America. The Predator quickly captivated audiences with its menacing presence, advanced technology, and relentless pursuit of worthy adversaries.

Designing the Iconic Hunter:

The design of the Predator was a collaboration between special effects wizard Stan Winston, creature effects artist Richard Landon, and concept artist Paul M. Sammon. The team aimed to create a unique and formidable creature that would stand apart from other movie monsters. The final design incorporated elements of reptiles, insects, and a humanoid form, complete with mandibles, dreadlocks, and camouflage technology. The result was an instant classic, inspiring awe and fear in equal measure.

The First Predator Movie:

Predator (1987) became an instant hit, blending intense action, suspense, and science fiction elements. The film showcased the Predator's incredible strength, agility, and advanced weaponry, making it a worthy adversary for Arnold Schwarzenegger's iconic character, Dutch. The movie's success led to several sequels, expanding the Predator's mythology and solidifying its status as a legendary cinematic antagonist.

The Alien vs. Predator Crossovers:

The Predator franchise has intersected with another iconic sci-fi franchise, Alien, in the crossover series Alien vs. Predator. The concept originated from a popular comic book series and later spawned two feature films: Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007). These crossovers introduced new layers to the Predator's lore, exploring its role in a larger universe of extraterrestrial creatures and interstellar conflicts.

In my drawing, based on the hunter design from the 2010 video game Aliens vs. Predator, my aim was to evoke a sense of the Predator's menacing presence. I tried to capture the essence of this fearsome alien hunter, emphasizing its distinct features and conveying its relentless determination as it stalks its prey. Through my artwork, I pay tribute to the Predator's enduring legacy and add a personal touch to its visual representation.

Conclusion:

With my new artwork of the Predator, I pay homage to its iconic status within the science fiction genre. From its inception in the first Predator movie to its expanded mythology through crossovers with the Alien franchise, the Predator continues to captivate audiences with its fearsome presence. My drawing honors this legendary alien hunter, aiming to showcase its distinct design and evoke the thrill and excitement associated with its relentless pursuit of prey.

Godzilla vs Sea Serpent

New art of King of the Monsters, Godzilla, the legendary reptilian star of Japanese studio, Toho. Updated 3/30/2023 This illustration depicts a colossal snake that arose from the depths of Lake Michigan and does battle with Godzilla in front of the Chicago skyline. The scene was based on the new composition "Godzilla in Chicago" by Michiru Oshima.  I had free range to choose which of the many versions of Godzilla I used, so I went with the GMK design, from the movie, Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. A bit of a mouth full to say, but great flick with awesome creature designs, and an absolutely vicious take on Godzilla. The Sea Serpent was a brand new creature created for the music with no established design. For inspiration, I looked at real-life animals like the anaconda, which spends a lot of its time in the water, the moray eel, and a sunfish for its spikey fins. Work in progress for a new commission I'm working on. Sketch...

Sketch of Godzilla from "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack".
