Introduction:

In my recent digital illustration, I had the thrilling opportunity to bring to life one of the most fascinating creatures from Earth's prehistoric past: the Mosasaur. Inspired by its appearance in the movie Jurassic World, I sought to capture the essence of this remarkable predator in its natural habitat. Join me as we delve into the real-world facts surrounding the Mosasaur, its role in the Jurassic World franchise, and the creative process behind my illustration.

The Real-World Mosasaur:

The Mosasaur, scientifically known as Mosasauridae, was a group of aquatic reptiles that roamed the seas during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70-66 million years ago. These colossal creatures inhabited various parts of the world, including present-day North America, Europe, and parts of Africa. With their streamlined bodies and powerful tails, Mosasaurs were well-adapted to a marine lifestyle.

Feeding Habits and Adaptations:

As apex predators of their time, Mosasaurs ruled the oceans, feasting upon a diverse menu of marine life. Their diet primarily consisted of fish, ammonites, turtles, and even other marine reptiles. With their elongated jaws lined with sharp, interlocking teeth, these fearsome creatures were perfectly equipped for hunting and tearing apart their prey.

Extinction and Legacy:

Despite their dominance in the ancient seas, the Mosasaurs, like many other reptilian groups, faced extinction. The exact reasons for their demise are still under scientific debate. One prevailing theory suggests that the extinction event that wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period, possibly caused by an asteroid impact, also played a role in the decline of Mosasaurs. Additionally, changes in climate and sea levels, as well as competition with other marine organisms, may have contributed to their extinction.

The Mosasaur in Jurassic World:

The Mosasaur gained renewed popularity in recent years through its prominent role in the Jurassic World film series. In Jurassic World (2015) and its sequels, this ancient predator emerges as one of the park's star attractions, captivating audiences with its immense size and ferocity. The filmmakers beautifully recreated the Mosasaur's aquatic habitat and depicted its awe-inspiring hunting techniques, showcasing its ability to launch itself out of the water to snatch prey.

About the Art:

In my digital illustration, I aimed to capture the essence of the Mosasaur's predatory nature while emphasizing its graceful movement through the water. The creature, swimming downward from the rays of sunlight, represents its formidable presence lurking beneath the surface. Its open mouth, revealing rows of sharp teeth, showcases its deadly prowess and serves as a reminder of the beast's unrelenting hunger.

Symbolizing the mystery of the deep, the dark depths surrounding the Mosasaur hint at the unknown, creating an atmosphere of anticipation and tension. The illustration serves as a visual reminder of the Mosasaur's ancient legacy and the untamed power it once held in Earth's ancient oceans.

Conclusion:

Through my digital illustration inspired by the Mosasaur from Jurassic World, I hope to have conveyed the majesty and lethal beauty of this incredible prehistoric creature. By exploring its real-world existence, from its habitat and feeding habits to its unfortunate demise, we can appreciate the significance of this ancient predator. As it continues to captivate our imagination through its portrayal in popular culture, the Mosasaur stands as a testament to the awe-inspiring diversity of life that once thrived on our planet.

Godzilla vs Sea Serpent

New art of King of the Monsters, Godzilla, the legendary reptilian star of Japanese studio, Toho. Updated 3/30/2023 This illustration depicts a colossal snake that arose from the depths of Lake Michigan and does battle with Godzilla in front of the Chicago skyline. The scene was based on the new composition "Godzilla in Chicago" by Michiru Oshima.  I had free range to choose which of the many versions of Godzilla I used, so I went with the GMK design, from the movie, Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. A bit of a mouth full to say, but great flick with awesome creature designs, and an absolutely vicious take on Godzilla. The Sea Serpent was a brand new creature created for the music with no established design. For inspiration, I looked at real-life animals like the anaconda, which spends a lot of its time in the water, the moray eel, and a sunfish for its spikey fins. Work in progress for a new commission I'm working on. Sketch...

Friday the 13th, in October!

New Illustration by Chris Trefz of Jason Voorhees: The Ominous Horror of Friday the 13th in October. Introduction: Friday the 13th, a date etched in the annals of horror history, has long been synonymous with spine-chilling superstitions and dark tales. It's a day where the ordinary can take on an eerie aura, and the ominous seems all too real.  This year, the stars align in the spookiest way possible, as Friday the 13th falls in the eerie month of October. To celebrate this fortuitous alignment of dates, I've created a bone-chilling artwork that pays homage to one of horror's most iconic figures: Jason Voorhees from the "Friday the 13th" film series. The Legend of Jason Voorhees: Before delving into the artwork, it's crucial to understand the legacy of Jason Voorhees. Born of the horror genre, Jason is a name that sends shivers down the spine of any self-respecting horror fan. This masked and machete-wielding slasher first appeared in the original "Frid...
