The Snake

New Halloween-themed artwork of a sinister serpent wrapping its coils around a grinning skull.

Next piece in my series of Halloween-themed speed paintings.

As Halloween approaches, our imagination takes flight, conjuring up eerie images that send shivers down our spines. One such haunting depiction is that of a snake coiled around a skull, a powerful symbol that embodies both intrigue and fear. In this blog article, we will explore the inspiration behind this chilling artwork and delve into how it perfectly captures the essence of Halloween.

The Serpent: Symbol of Transformation and Mystery

Throughout history, snakes have been imbued with a sense of mystique. Often associated with transformation and rebirth, these slithering creatures have appeared in countless mythologies and folklore. Their ability to shed their skin has long been seen as a metaphor for personal growth and renewal. The presence of a snake in your artwork signifies the shedding of the old, embracing change, and embarking on a journey of self-discovery.

The Skull: Icon of Mortality and the Macabre

Few symbols are as universally recognized as the skull, evoking thoughts of mortality, the afterlife, and the darker aspects of existence. As a potent reminder of our finite time on Earth, it serves as a powerful memento mori. The skull's association with Halloween is deeply rooted in ancient traditions such as the Celtic festival of Samhain, where the boundary between the living and the dead was believed to be blurred.

Uniting Symbolism: The Duality of Life and Death

When the snake intertwines with the skull, an intriguing juxtaposition emerges. The intertwining coils symbolize the eternal cycle of life and death, blurring the boundaries between the two realms. It represents the harmony between opposing forces, a delicate balance between the inevitable end and the perpetual cycle of renewal.

Halloween's Perfect Pair: Mystery and Thrills

Halloween is a time when we embrace the enigmatic and embrace the thrill of the unknown. The snake coiled around the skull encapsulates the essence of Halloween, fueling our fascination with the macabre and the mysterious. The combination of these two potent symbols captivates our imagination, evoking a sense of excitement, intrigue, and a delicious shiver down our spines.

In final, this piece brings together the serpentine enigma and the haunting reminder of our mortality. By intertwining these iconic elements, your artwork captures the spirit of Halloween—celebrating the unknown, embracing the duality of life and death, and sparking a sense of wonderment and thrill in all who behold it.

Godzilla vs Sea Serpent

New art of King of the Monsters, Godzilla, the legendary reptilian star of Japanese studio, Toho. Updated 3/30/2023 This illustration depicts a colossal snake that arose from the depths of Lake Michigan and does battle with Godzilla in front of the Chicago skyline. The scene was based on the new composition "Godzilla in Chicago" by Michiru Oshima.  I had free range to choose which of the many versions of Godzilla I used, so I went with the GMK design, from the movie, Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. A bit of a mouth full to say, but great flick with awesome creature designs, and an absolutely vicious take on Godzilla. The Sea Serpent was a brand new creature created for the music with no established design. For inspiration, I looked at real-life animals like the anaconda, which spends a lot of its time in the water, the moray eel, and a sunfish for its spikey fins. Work in progress for a new commission I'm working on. Sketch...

Friday the 13th, in October!

New Illustration by Chris Trefz of Jason Voorhees: The Ominous Horror of Friday the 13th in October. Introduction: Friday the 13th, a date etched in the annals of horror history, has long been synonymous with spine-chilling superstitions and dark tales. It's a day where the ordinary can take on an eerie aura, and the ominous seems all too real.  This year, the stars align in the spookiest way possible, as Friday the 13th falls in the eerie month of October. To celebrate this fortuitous alignment of dates, I've created a bone-chilling artwork that pays homage to one of horror's most iconic figures: Jason Voorhees from the "Friday the 13th" film series. The Legend of Jason Voorhees: Before delving into the artwork, it's crucial to understand the legacy of Jason Voorhees. Born of the horror genre, Jason is a name that sends shivers down the spine of any self-respecting horror fan. This masked and machete-wielding slasher first appeared in the original "Frid...
