The Old Church

New Halloween-themed Illustration of Chris Trefz, of an Eerie Abandoned Church with a Mysterious Green Glow.

Three nights ago that eerie green light appeared inside the old abandoned church up on the hill. We dared Johnny to go in and find out what it was. It's been over an hour since he squeezed in through one of the boarded-up windows, but he still hasn't come back out.

The Old Church is the 5th entry in my Halloween 2021 Speedpaint series.

Exploring Urban Decay: Unveiling the Beauty in "The Old Church"

Introduction:

Urban decay has always fascinated me—the gradual deterioration of once vibrant structures, the passage of time leaving its mark, and the hidden stories they hold. In this article, I want to delve into the allure of urban decay, the practice of urban exploration, and the inspiration behind my artwork, "The Old Church."

Urban Decay: A Captivating Symbol of Time's Passage:

Witnessing the decline of once-majestic buildings and structures serves as a potent reminder of the impermanence of human endeavors. The worn facades and crumbling walls are a visual testament to the shifting tides of economic fortune and societal change. Yet, amidst the decay, there is a haunting beauty that draws us in—a bittersweet fascination with the passage of time.

The Thrill of Urban Exploration:

Urban exploration, or urbex, has always been a passion of mine. It involves seeking out forgotten and abandoned places, uncovering their hidden secrets, and capturing their essence through photography and art. Exploring these forgotten vestiges of the past allows us to connect with history, breathe life into forgotten narratives, and preserve the memories of bygone eras.

"The Old Church": Embracing the Eerie Beauty of Decay:

In creating my artwork, "The Old Church," I aimed to capture the unique allure of urban decay. The centerpiece of the piece is a once-sacred structure, now lost to time and neglect. Its weathered walls and crumbling gravestones stand as a testament to the passage of countless years. Surrounding the church are gnarled, lifeless trees, adding to the eerie ambiance that envelopes the scene.

With meticulous attention to detail, I sought to portray the dilapidation and decay of the church. Each stroke of the brush and pencil aims to capture the worn textures, the cracks in the walls, and the faded grandeur. But what sets this artwork apart is the addition of an otherworldly element—a haunting, green glow that emanates from within the decaying structure. It hints at a darker presence, an unseen force that now inhabits this forsaken sanctuary.

In Conclusion:

Urban decay holds a unique fascination, inviting us to contemplate the beauty in decay and the transience of human existence. Through the practice of urban exploration and artistic expression, we can breathe life into forgotten spaces and uncover the hidden stories they hold. "The Old Church" artwork represents my attempt to embrace the eerie allure of urban decay, inviting viewers to explore the mysteries that lie within these forgotten places and ponder the interplay between time, nature, and the supernatural.

Godzilla vs Sea Serpent

New art of King of the Monsters, Godzilla, the legendary reptilian star of Japanese studio, Toho. Updated 3/30/2023 This illustration depicts a colossal snake that arose from the depths of Lake Michigan and does battle with Godzilla in front of the Chicago skyline. The scene was based on the new composition "Godzilla in Chicago" by Michiru Oshima.  I had free range to choose which of the many versions of Godzilla I used, so I went with the GMK design, from the movie, Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. A bit of a mouth full to say, but great flick with awesome creature designs, and an absolutely vicious take on Godzilla. The Sea Serpent was a brand new creature created for the music with no established design. For inspiration, I looked at real-life animals like the anaconda, which spends a lot of its time in the water, the moray eel, and a sunfish for its spikey fins. Work in progress for a new commission I'm working on. Sketch...

Godzilla Sketch

New Illustration by Chris Trefz of Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack - A Legendary Clash of Titans. Sketch of Godzilla from "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack". Introduction: In the realm of kaiju films, where colossal creatures clash in epic battles, there is one standout entry that has left an indelible mark on the genre for me: "Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack." Released in 2001, this film, produced by Toho Studios and directed and co-written by Shusuke Kaneko, captivated audiences with its thrilling plot, awe-inspiring monster battles, and a fresh portrayal of Godzilla as a formidable and villainous force. Accompanying this cinematic masterpiece is my own black-and-white marker drawing that aims to portray the malevolence and strength of Godzilla, capturing the essence of his role in the movie. The Plot: "Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Mon...
