The Werewolf

New Halloween-Themed Illustration by Chris Trefz of a Ravenous Werewolf.

Transformed into a bloodthirsty beast by the rise of the full moon, the Werewolf is the 4th entry in my Halloween 2021 Speedpaint series.

Introduction:

Werewolves, those mythical creatures that embody the fusion of man and wolf, have captured the human imagination for centuries. The concept of the werewolf, often associated with the full moon and a transformative curse, has permeated folklore, literature, and popular culture. In this article, we delve into the origins of the werewolf myth, explore the lore surrounding the werewolf curse, and examine the enduring presence of werewolves in popular culture.

Origin of the Myth:

The legend of the werewolf dates back to ancient times, appearing in various cultures and civilizations. It was believed that individuals possessed the ability to transform into wolves, either voluntarily or through a curse. The exact origins of the myth are shrouded in mystery, with different tales emerging from different parts of the world. The werewolf myth often symbolized the connection between humans and nature, exploring the duality of human nature and the wild instincts that reside within.

The Werewolf Curse:

One of the most intriguing aspects of the werewolf myth is the curse that triggers the transformation. According to popular lore, the curse is often linked to the influence of the full moon. When the moon reaches its peak, those afflicted by the curse undergo a dramatic metamorphosis, their human form giving way to the primal nature of the wolf. This transformation is often accompanied by heightened senses, incredible strength, and an insatiable hunger for flesh.

Werewolves in Popular Culture:

Werewolves have had a significant impact on popular culture, appearing in countless books, movies, and other forms of media. They have become synonymous with horror and the supernatural, captivating audiences with their ferocity and the inherent conflict between their human and animal sides. From classic literary works like "The Wolf Man" to modern-day franchises like "Twilight" and "Underworld," werewolves have left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.

My Artwork:

As an artist, I was drawn to the untamed power and primal allure of the werewolf. In my artwork, I aimed to capture the essence of the beast, emphasizing its muscular physique, elongated claws poised for attack, and a menacing snarl that reveals its razor-sharp fangs. The piercing yellow eye, glowing with an intensity that hints at its otherworldly nature, adds an extra layer of intrigue. Through my artwork, I sought to convey the raw ferocity and awe-inspiring presence of the werewolf, paying homage to this iconic creature of the night.

Conclusion:

Werewolves continue to captivate our imagination, blending the boundaries between humanity and the wild. The werewolf myth, with its curse, transformation, and inherent struggle, resonates with our fascination for the unknown and our exploration of the human psyche. As we delve into the rich history of werewolves and their enduring presence in popular culture, we embrace the primal instincts that lie dormant within us all.

Whether feared or revered, the werewolf stands as a testament to the enduring power of mythology and the enduring allure of the supernatural.

Godzilla vs Sea Serpent

New art of King of the Monsters, Godzilla, the legendary reptilian star of Japanese studio, Toho. Updated 3/30/2023 This illustration depicts a colossal snake that arose from the depths of Lake Michigan and does battle with Godzilla in front of the Chicago skyline. The scene was based on the new composition "Godzilla in Chicago" by Michiru Oshima.  I had free range to choose which of the many versions of Godzilla I used, so I went with the GMK design, from the movie, Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. A bit of a mouth full to say, but great flick with awesome creature designs, and an absolutely vicious take on Godzilla. The Sea Serpent was a brand new creature created for the music with no established design. For inspiration, I looked at real-life animals like the anaconda, which spends a lot of its time in the water, the moray eel, and a sunfish for its spikey fins. Work in progress for a new commission I'm working on. Sketch...

Friday the 13th, in October!

New Illustration by Chris Trefz of Jason Voorhees: The Ominous Horror of Friday the 13th in October. Introduction: Friday the 13th, a date etched in the annals of horror history, has long been synonymous with spine-chilling superstitions and dark tales. It's a day where the ordinary can take on an eerie aura, and the ominous seems all too real.  This year, the stars align in the spookiest way possible, as Friday the 13th falls in the eerie month of October. To celebrate this fortuitous alignment of dates, I've created a bone-chilling artwork that pays homage to one of horror's most iconic figures: Jason Voorhees from the "Friday the 13th" film series. The Legend of Jason Voorhees: Before delving into the artwork, it's crucial to understand the legacy of Jason Voorhees. Born of the horror genre, Jason is a name that sends shivers down the spine of any self-respecting horror fan. This masked and machete-wielding slasher first appeared in the original "Frid...
