The Zombie - Halloween Series

New Halloween-Themed Illustration by Chris Trefz of a Shambling Zombie.

Doomed to roam the earth in a state of undying decay, tormented with an unending hunger for the flesh of those who yet live. The Zombie is the 3rd entry in my Halloween 2021 Speedpaint series.

Unleashing the Undead: Exploring the Mythology and Symbolism of Zombies.

Introduction:

Zombies, those relentless and decaying creatures, have become a staple in horror and popular culture. Originating from ancient folklore and legends, these undead beings have captured the imagination of many, representing fears of death, disease, and the crumbling of societal order. In this article, we delve into the mythology and roots of zombies, their symbolic significance, and their enduring presence in popular culture.

The Mythology and Historical Roots:

The concept of zombies finds its origins in various cultural and religious beliefs. In Haitian folklore, the zombie is believed to be a reanimated corpse controlled by a sorcerer, known as a bokor. Through dark rituals and voodoo practices, the bokor can enslave a person's soul, rendering them a mindless servant. This idea of zombies as slaves represents a fear of losing control and autonomy.

In other cultures, the notion of the undead has existed for centuries. Ancient texts and tales from different civilizations often speak of corpses being brought back to life through supernatural means. These stories highlight a fascination with death, mortality, and the potential consequences of tampering with the natural order.

Symbolism of Fear:

Zombies serve as a powerful symbol of humanity's deep-rooted fears surrounding death and disease. The relentless pursuit of the living by hordes of undead creatures taps into our collective anxieties about mortality and the fragility of life. The image of a decaying body, driven by a primal hunger for flesh, strikes at the core of our innate fears and survival instincts.

Moreover, zombies can be seen as a metaphor for the spread of infectious diseases and pandemics. The mindless nature of these creatures reflects the rapid transmission and contagion of illnesses, highlighting society's apprehension towards widespread epidemics and the collapse of healthcare systems.

Zombies in Popular Culture:

The portrayal of zombies in popular culture has evolved over time, shaping the archetype we recognize today. From classic films like George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" to contemporary television shows like "The Walking Dead," zombies have become an integral part of the horror genre.

In recent years, zombies have transcended the realms of horror and infiltrated various forms of media. Video games, comics, and literature have all embraced the undead, offering different narratives and interpretations of the zombie apocalypse. This enduring fascination with zombies reflects our ongoing captivation with the macabre and the exploration of our deepest fears.

My Artwork:

In my artwork, I sought to capture the essence of the zombie's fearsome nature and its symbolic representation. The emaciated figure, clad in tattered and blood-stained clothing, portrays the physical deterioration associated with the undead. The missing arm and eye serve as reminders of the creature's decay, while the outstretched hand symbolizes its insatiable hunger for human flesh.

The expression on the zombie's face is vacant and devoid of emotion, emphasizing its mechanical existence devoid of intelligence or malice. The enlarged hand reaching out towards the viewer creates an immersive experience, evoking a sense of imminent danger and the viewer's vulnerability in the face of the undead.

Conclusion:

Zombies have ingrained themselves deeply within our collective consciousness, representing our innate fears of death, disease, and the collapse of societal order. Through their mythological origins and their role in popular culture, they continue to captivate and terrify us. My artwork aims to capture the essence of these fearsome creatures, reminding us of our mortality and the fragility of the human condition.

As long as our fascination with the macabre persists, zombies will continue to roam the corridors of our imagination, reminding us of the inherent darkness that lurks within us all.

Godzilla vs Sea Serpent

New art of King of the Monsters, Godzilla, the legendary reptilian star of Japanese studio, Toho. Updated 3/30/2023 This illustration depicts a colossal snake that arose from the depths of Lake Michigan and does battle with Godzilla in front of the Chicago skyline. The scene was based on the new composition "Godzilla in Chicago" by Michiru Oshima.  I had free range to choose which of the many versions of Godzilla I used, so I went with the GMK design, from the movie, Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. A bit of a mouth full to say, but great flick with awesome creature designs, and an absolutely vicious take on Godzilla. The Sea Serpent was a brand new creature created for the music with no established design. For inspiration, I looked at real-life animals like the anaconda, which spends a lot of its time in the water, the moray eel, and a sunfish for its spikey fins. Work in progress for a new commission I'm working on. Sketch...

Friday the 13th, in October!

New Illustration by Chris Trefz of Jason Voorhees: The Ominous Horror of Friday the 13th in October. Introduction: Friday the 13th, a date etched in the annals of horror history, has long been synonymous with spine-chilling superstitions and dark tales. It's a day where the ordinary can take on an eerie aura, and the ominous seems all too real.  This year, the stars align in the spookiest way possible, as Friday the 13th falls in the eerie month of October. To celebrate this fortuitous alignment of dates, I've created a bone-chilling artwork that pays homage to one of horror's most iconic figures: Jason Voorhees from the "Friday the 13th" film series. The Legend of Jason Voorhees: Before delving into the artwork, it's crucial to understand the legacy of Jason Voorhees. Born of the horror genre, Jason is a name that sends shivers down the spine of any self-respecting horror fan. This masked and machete-wielding slasher first appeared in the original "Frid...
