Godzilla vs Biollante - Halloween Rematch 🎃

New Illustration by Chris Trefz: A Halloween Take on a Kaiju Battle!

This year will bring more tricks than treats as Biollante returns from space on Halloween night to challenge the King of Monsters to a rematch. Meanwhile, the atomic titan has come ashore to eat candy and kick ass... and he's all out of candy.

Here's some closeup for more detail.

Hey there, fellow monster enthusiasts! Today, I'm excited to share the backstory and creation process behind my latest digital illustration: the epic showdown between Godzilla and Biollante in the Halloween spirit!

Godzilla vs. Biollante: The Movie Rundown

Let's kick things off with a quick trip down monster memory lane. "Godzilla vs. Biollante" hit the screens back on December 16, 1989, directed and written by Kazuki Omori and brought to life by the creative minds at Toho Studio. The plot? Well, without giving away all the spoilers, let's just say it involves the iconic Godzilla facing off against the plant-based behemoth, Biollante.

Halloween: My Favorite Time of the Year

Now, why the Halloween twist? Well, for me, Halloween is more than just a day; it's a whole vibe. The spooky atmosphere, horror movies, haunted houses – I'm all in! And since Godzilla is my ride-or-die monster, I decided to merge my two loves into one monstrous masterpiece.

But wait, why not just throw Godzilla into a typical Halloween scenario? Turns out, it's not as easy as you'd think. Godzilla isn't your run-of-the-mill horror character. You're not gonna find him lurking in your backyard on Halloween night. So, I put on my thinking cap and considered having him face off against a monstrous Jack O' Lantern. But then, a lightbulb moment – why not stick to Godzilla's roots and bring back Biollante?

The Artistic Process: Textures and Experimentation

Now, let's get into the nitty-gritty of the artwork. Texture was the name of the game, and I experimented with some new tricks. Godzilla, being the scaly reptilian king he is, was a bit more straightforward. Drawing scales and playing with layer effects like bevel and emboss gave him that rugged, 3D appearance.

Biollante, on the other hand, was a whole viney maze. I drew a bunch of shapes, applied bevel and emboss, and created a textured tangle of vines and roots. Think of it as a botanical experiment gone monstrous. I even threw in some veiny structures and creases to add that extra layer of plant-like skin realism.

Setting the Halloween Mood

To really amp up the Halloween vibe, I added an enormous full moon behind the monsters. Silhouetted against it are bats in flight – because what's Halloween without a few bats, right? The clouds got a supernatural touch with a distinct purple hue, setting the stage for a spooktacular showdown.

As a final touch, two military helicopters hover, their spotlights illuminating the colossal clash. It's like a monster movie director's dream come true.

So, there you have it – the Halloween rematch we never knew we needed. Godzilla vs. Biollante, under the eerie moonlight, with a touch of Halloween magic. I hope you enjoy this monstrous creation as much as I enjoyed bringing it to life!

Until next time, stay monstrous!

Godzilla vs Sea Serpent

New art of King of the Monsters, Godzilla, the legendary reptilian star of Japanese studio, Toho. Updated 3/30/2023 This illustration depicts a colossal snake that arose from the depths of Lake Michigan and does battle with Godzilla in front of the Chicago skyline. The scene was based on the new composition "Godzilla in Chicago" by Michiru Oshima.  I had free range to choose which of the many versions of Godzilla I used, so I went with the GMK design, from the movie, Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. A bit of a mouth full to say, but great flick with awesome creature designs, and an absolutely vicious take on Godzilla. The Sea Serpent was a brand new creature created for the music with no established design. For inspiration, I looked at real-life animals like the anaconda, which spends a lot of its time in the water, the moray eel, and a sunfish for its spikey fins. Work in progress for a new commission I'm working on. Sketch...

Friday the 13th, in October!

New Illustration by Chris Trefz of Jason Voorhees: The Ominous Horror of Friday the 13th in October. Introduction: Friday the 13th, a date etched in the annals of horror history, has long been synonymous with spine-chilling superstitions and dark tales. It's a day where the ordinary can take on an eerie aura, and the ominous seems all too real.  This year, the stars align in the spookiest way possible, as Friday the 13th falls in the eerie month of October. To celebrate this fortuitous alignment of dates, I've created a bone-chilling artwork that pays homage to one of horror's most iconic figures: Jason Voorhees from the "Friday the 13th" film series. The Legend of Jason Voorhees: Before delving into the artwork, it's crucial to understand the legacy of Jason Voorhees. Born of the horror genre, Jason is a name that sends shivers down the spine of any self-respecting horror fan. This masked and machete-wielding slasher first appeared in the original "Frid...
